University of Erlangen/Nürnberg
A project group of four people at this University is preparing a Book on the Synagogues and Jewish life in 200 Jewish communities in Bavaria, half of them in Lower Franconia. The provisional title includes the words “More than stones”.While there existed many more Jewish communities in Bavaria, the work being prepared is limited to those still existing in 1930. The co-author Barbara Eberhardt, who is studying for a PhD in Theology, spent a few days with Cordula Kappner. Since her retirement from the Library and Information Centre in Hassfurt, Cordula established her Archive at Castle Gleisenau in Ebelsbach. I believe she has files - of various thicknesses - on every Jewish Family in the Landkreis (rural district) Hassberge, where there were many Jewish communities, of which 11 will be included in the study.
Barbara Eberhardt and her fellow authors are likely to obtain more information on the Jewish communities in the Landkreis than on any other in Bavaria. Their work is scheduled for publication at the beginning of 2006.
