Synagoga and Ecclesia - back in their occustomed place at the Dom

Those of my readers abroad who have visited Bamberg since the end of the War will have been surprised that the pedestals on the left and right of the Princes’ Portal of the Dom, on which they were used to see the famous sculptures of Ecclesia and Synagoga were bare.

These sculptures were in fact moved inside the Dom already before the War, in order to protect them against air pollution and damage. They are still there, but copies in stone have been made and placed on their accustomed place. Other sculptures on the Tympanon have been replaced, so that it is now almost complete.

The press report of the unveiling ceremony on 24 April does not mention that the figure of the devil trying to pull a Jew with him is still in place underneath the statue of Synagoga! (See FT 25 April, “Ecclesia und Synagoga zurückgekehrt”).
