Kunigunde Lieb on her 93rd Birthday
In my book Juden in Bamberg etc., in the chapter on Hausangestellte - Treue in Extremis, I have described the relationship of my grandmother Lina Löbl with her home help (on p.154) and her brave loyalty (p.161).
When I wrote about her, I did not yet know that she had been denounced for visitng my grandmother after this was forbidden and that the Gestapo came to arrest her. She apparently defended herself verbally so fiercely that they went away.
I was delighted that Mayor Werner Hippelius visited her on the occasion of her 93rd birthday on 27 February to thank her on behalf of the City of Bamberg and to present flowers. He pointed out, that her courage should remind people of many other helpers in Jewish households who showed devotion to their former employers and courage before their deportation to the death camps, several years after the helpers had been forced to leave their employ. (See press report in Appendix 19)
As always during my stays in Bamberg, I visited Kuni again in November and found her in quite good shape.
